Internships

Metaphysical Circus Press is a publisher of literary fantastic fiction, also called slipstream, weird, visionary, or magical realist fiction, & book reviews. We’re passionately committed to progressive action and diversity, and actively seek work by traditionally underrepresented writers.

MCP is currently focused on publishing the literary magazine, See the Elephant, released in ebook formats and online. As of Issue Three, to be released in winter of 2017, See the Elephant will also be available in print.

Internships are offered year round to students and non-students with a love for this kind of literature. Hours are flexible. This is an unpaid internship.

Location: All internships are telecommute positions, so you will work from your own computer and internet connection.

Internship Opportunity #1: Public Relations and Social Media Marketing

Intern Responsibilities May Include:

  • Marketing See the Elephant Magazine through PR and social media.
  • Researching and writing basic news releases.
  • Crafting tweets, Facebook posts, etc. that fit with the brand and message.
  • Coming up with inexpensive, innovative PR and marketing ideas and implementing them.

Intern Qualifications:

  • Access to computer and internet.
  • High comfort level with social media and passion for social media marketing.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work to weekly deadlines without micro-management.
  • Familiarity with the fantastic modes of fiction. If you don’t have familiarity with this style but would like to, please request complementary copies of See the Elephant. Internship Opportunity #2: Editorial Support

Intern Responsibilities May Include:

  • Read submissions to See the Elephant Magazine and submissions to our New Voices contest and give feedback to the editors on whether you feel the story should advance to the next round.
  • Beta read or proofread manuscripts

Intern Qualifications:

  • Access to computer and internet.
  • Ability to work to weekly deadlines without micro-management.
  • Familiarity with the fantastic modes of fiction. Has read issues one and two of See the Elephant.

 

Internship Opportunity #3: Book Reviewer

Intern Responsibilities:

  • Read novels or collections of short stories selected and supplied by Metaphysical Circus Press and write 500-700 word reviews to be published on the online version of See the Elephant Magazine.

Intern Qualifications:

  • Access to computer and internet.
  • Ability to work to deadlines without micro-management.
  • High level of familiarity with the fantastic modes of fiction and contemporary cannon of weird, slipstream and magical realist works.
  • Ability to express formulate a thesis and express thoughts in a concise and compelling manner that demonstrates insight into the work, and which is accessible to the average reader.

Submit:

  • Cover letter explaining relevant experience or study, favorite books or writers, and your areas of interest. You may combine categories if you are interested in more than one.
  • The number of hours per week you would be available to work, and proposed start and end dates.
  • Whether you will want college credit for your internship. If yes, the name and contact information for your supervisor
  • Two references that include title, email and phone number.
